Apocalypse when?

The human mind is a fascinating thing innit? Particularly the part associated with imagination. Today, I was sitting with some friends watching the CEO of BP on TV being grilled by a group of US senators in a House of Representatives hearing. Incidentally, some of the questions were penetrating, some were silly and others were just downright stupid. Americans are a funny bunch. Anyway I digress. We then watched live footage of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Since April 20th 2010, between 35,000 and 50,000 barrels of oil (contingent upon who is telling the truth) have been gushing into the waters of the gulf. It really is a sad sight. The bird's eye view of the gulf depicts reddish black veins of oil running across the water surface - almost as if the sea was bleeding...

"What if I were to drop a flaming Zippo lighter into the water?" someone said.

"Yeah and what if it started raining fire?" said another sarcastically.

I laughed it off. But then I thought about it for a second. It actually could RAIN FIRE. Look, I am not a marine scientist or a meteorologist but let's think about this for a second. The area in which the spill occurred is a hurricane zone - pretty close to New Orleans which was notoriously ravished by Hurricane Katrina a few years back. These hurricane winds are capable of gushing up to 200km/h picking up warm tropical water in its torrential cyclonic psychotic winds and heading towards the first victim of a coast. Within this water is oil from the spill; oil from this spill that is tossed and turned high up in the air. Combine this with a storm that yields thunder and lightning and...

Can someone say sparks? Fire? Rain? Rain of fire?

And isn't New Orleans the land of Mardi Gras booby bearing? Isn't it also close to Miami, Cancun and a host of other islands which also experience a lot of drunken, college booby bearing and other things of that nature? Are the gods angry? Or should I really be asking: Is God angry?

Food for thought people. Food for thought.

  1. this is a mind maze jimi- where you cannot cheat by tracing in reverse. interesting, but to be honest, i just think it shows something more interesting- how people are not ready to bare the brunt of mistakes they commit, and really we don't have a solution to any problem that has negative externalities, cuz all people truly care about is $$$$ DOLLA DOLLA BILLS

  3. i would definitely agree with u that all people care about is $$$..but you know what if some corporation is going to be given the power and responsibility to dig oil in precious waters then they should be adequately prepared if these 'negative externalities' occur...not say 'umm i was out of the loop' in a charmingly empty British accent...and the government should have checked on trouble shooting procedures before the drill touched the sea bed.

frankly i believe this incident represents another 'invisible hand' moment where the need for change has become more apparent than ever
